How to check a property listing before contacting or paying

Check the offer, map position, photographs, lister identity and inconsistent details. Understand what a public listing and contact reveal do not verify.

Check the offer before judging its attractiveness

Read the stated purpose first. A marked property is a location record, not automatically an offer for sale or rent. Confirm what is being offered, the currency, amount, area and unit. Note any conflict between the title, description and structured fields before treating the page as an offer you understand.

Ask about the current availability and what is included. A listing can become outdated or omit important facts without revealing that in its headline. Keep owner statements distinct from independently verified information. A complete-looking advertisement is still an advertisement.

Compare the map with the written location

Check whether the pin and written place name identify the same property. Place names can have multiple spellings or describe a broad area, while entrances and access roads may be elsewhere on the parcel. Ask the lister to explain a discrepancy rather than assuming a map position is exact legal evidence.

A boundary drawn on MarkMyProperty records the outline entered by the user. It does not establish surveyed extent, ownership or permitted use. Where those details matter, consult the relevant local records and qualified professionals. A clear drawing can support a conversation without resolving those questions.

Use photographs as evidence of appearance only

Check whether images appear to show the same unit or parcel, and ask when they were taken. A furnished photograph does not prove the furniture is included. Development promotional imagery may not show the offered apartment. Ask for clarification when photos and the description do not agree.

For a rental, consider whether the advertisement has been copied from another offer. The US Federal Trade Commission warns that rental scammers reuse legitimate photographs and descriptions with changed contact details. Search inconsistencies and unusually urgent payment demands are reasons to investigate, not a way to certify a listing automatically.

Verify the person and the offer independently

The platform contact workflow lets you connect with a lister. Paying credits to reveal contact details is not an ownership certificate, a tenancy check or a guarantee of availability. Confirm who you are dealing with and what authority they have to offer the property through appropriate independent channels.

For a rental, the FTC recommends checking the property and the person offering it before committing money, and cautions that even a viewing or tour is not a complete guarantee. Its guidance applies to US consumer protection; elsewhere use your local consumer authority and property-record processes for the applicable checks.

Separate platform charges from property payments

Credits and optional plans are platform services with published pricing. A property deposit, purchase payment or tenancy payment is a separate matter requiring its own checks and documentation. Do not interpret a successful contact reveal as approval to send money to the person whose details you received.

Pause when pressured to skip checks or use a payment method you do not understand. Report misleading listings to MarkMyProperty support and suspected fraud to the appropriate local authority. Avoid publishing private identity documents or accusations in a listing description; use a suitable reporting channel with the relevant evidence.

  • Correct sale, rent or marked purpose
  • Consistent price, currency, area and unit
  • Map position that agrees with the description
  • Current images of the actual offer
  • Independently checked lister and authority
  • Separate review of any agreement or payment request

Frequently asked questions

Does a property map pin prove ownership?

No. A pin or user-drawn boundary describes the mapped location. Ownership, legal boundaries and permitted use require independent checks through relevant records and professionals.

Does revealing contact details verify a property?

No. Contact reveal provides a connection route through the platform. It does not certify ownership, the lister’s authority, availability or a payment request.
